News — reported facts, each attributed to its source
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and Concacaf president Victor Montagliani have written to FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposing a one-off payment of $10 million to each of FIFA's 211 member associations, according to reporting by The Times and Inside World Football. The letter was reportedly copied to members of the FIFA Council, which meets on Thursday 15 October.
What the letter reportedly says
- That a $10m distribution from FIFA's reserves "is conservative and more than manageable", and would still leave FIFA with about $2.6 billion in reserves.
- That each of the six confederations should receive an extra $36m, according to the summary of The Times' report published by Sports Business Journal.
- That "many remaining questions regarding the FFE proposal" must be addressed at the Council meeting — a reference to FIFA Forward Enterprise, the commercial-rights plan Mr Infantino said in July would not proceed.
Inside World Football reports this is the second such letter, after one on 19 September, and quotes Mr Infantino's 28 September reply: "I will not prejudge the amount. I will support the greatest level of additional funding that can responsibly be delivered through FIFA's proper governance process."
What is not confirmed
FCKFIFA has not seen the letter. The Times' original article is behind a paywall, and the other reports we found summarise or follow it, so they are not independent confirmation. We found no public FIFA statement responding to the letter. What the Council decides on Thursday is not known, and we will not anticipate it.
Why it matters to supporters
Member associations fund grassroots and national-team football. Whether money reaches them through FIFA's normal governance process, or is tied to a commercial plan, is a question about who controls the game's biggest revenues.
